How do I know when IP is bad
My issues are somewhere in the fuel system but I'm really bad at problem diagnosis.
If my truck was a gas user, I would say it feels and sounds like the timing was off.
Also, what manual is a good buy. I have an old Clymer truck but it isn't very Diesel friendly. I've looked at the Haynes and Chiltons but they don't look much better.

It starts okay, but not great, and blows white/blue exhaust. It won't idle at all when the engine warms up. I can drive it when the engine is cold (5 minutes) but with very low power. Once the engine warms up the power goes to near zero.
I've changed the fuel filter and will check the fuel pressure tomorrow. I'm trying to know what I should be looking for when troubleshooting. It looks like the IP would be the most expensive replacement in the fuel system but that is a rookie assumption. If it is a problem in the IP, would it be cheaper to repair the existing unit or buy a rebuilt.
I assume it is not individual injectors because the entire engine is effected, not just a couple of cylinders.
Thanks, Jaysen
Do the tests for the fuel pressure, also for power to the IP at the FSS, listen for the click.

Older trucks are susceptable to water intrusion due to the water separator being bypassed. Check the firewall by the booster for the water separator (canister with a pull ring). These can also remain open and leak air into the fuel system when the ring is pulled to drain water. Try placing a 3/8 bolt up the drain tube see if that stops the problem. If the problem goes away then think to put a shutoff spigot on the drain line. That way you can still use the water separator and easily stop air leakage with the spigot.
