replacing lug studs?

i just stripped a lug stud on my '82 f-150. i was doing my rear brakes and found that one of my lugs were hard to remove. finally i removed it and found that it was stripped. i bought new lugs all the way around, but need to replace that one stud in the rear. how do i do it? i read in chilton's that i can use a socket and big c-clamp. and i heard that i have to remove the axle assembly. what should i do?

I don't think it will be that hard. My 83 F250's semifloat had all the lug studs in a support inside the drum. You can beat them out with a big metal hammer.

Putting new ones in is a bit harder. Typical method is an impact wrench and a good lug nut. Tighten until lug stud is seated. I don't have an impact wrench at home and I don't weigh enough to hang on the end of a breaker bar and create the equivelent torque so I have to take it into a shop.

After you put everything back together check the wheel every 12-24 hrs for a couple days afterward to make sure the lug nuts aren't loose. They will become so as the studs continue to set themselves in the axle. You should do this even if a shop sets them for you, just to be safe
