Exhaust flow
Found a couple of nice looking, straight through glasspacks at a yard sale this AM. Seller said to install them with the louvers facing to the rear for best muffle.
For best muffle quality, is he correct? Not looking for loudness here.

Are they not marked inlet anywhere?
Last I read, these type of mufflers are more restrictive because of the turbulence created by the louvers. I would install them with the louvers facing away from the engine if you are going to use them.
The best flowing muffler that I have ever used is a Magnaflow. I have them on my 88 5.0 Mustang and they flow better then the 2 chamber 40 series Flowmasters that I replaced.
I also put a Single in/dual out on the 01 F150 that I had and the Magnaflow made a little more power and did flow better as well.
Just my opinion. But yeah, install them with the louvers facing the outlet to keep the turbulence to a minimum.
