I have a 2003 FX4 (with 26,500 miles on it) and it seems the transmission engages awefully slowly from reverse to first. Often, I'll wait two seconds and apply gas but the engine revs and the transmission doesn't engage. Then, the transmission hits first gear and I'm on my way. Occasionally, when I apply gas after a stop the engine revs for about a second but I don't go anywhere. A second or two later, the transmission engages and off I go.
Have you ever changed the tranny fluid? The fluyid may be old and alot of the detergents may have broke down because of how old the fluid is.
That is what I would do first, new fluid and filter. Dont get it it flushed with a machine. There is good step by step instructions on the internet explaining how to do it.
With that small amount of miles on it,i wouldnt think that it would be a fluid level issue, unless theres an obvious leak.If the truck has been driven hard, anything is possible, from a partially plugged tranny filter,to pump issues.
I think it would be safe to pull the pan, replace the fluid and filter.Ive never been into a Ford Automatic transmission, but if its anything like the Wifes 02 Impala setup, theres a magnet in the lower portion of the pan thats designed to trap metal particles. Its a messy process, and you can probably expect to use about 8 quarts of new fluid. The fluid in the Torque converter will remain...good luck
I have zero mechanical skills so dropping the pan and changing the filter and fluid is a non-starter for me. Would my best be Ford service, a major garage chain (Firestone, etc.), or a transmission specialist (AAMCO, etc.)? Thanks.

While the task is fairly straightforward,I commend you on not wanting to tackle it,unless one has the proper tools, place, and time its better left to the Pro,s....there is however a "downside" to taking it to a Transmission place such as AAmco,Coleman Taylor etc,and that is more often than not they will tell you the tranny needs a complete rebuild(Which it may,or may not)
The Ford dealership will likely be about the same.My suggestion is to take it to a local reputable garage, and merely request a "Transmission Service" Fluid/Filter etc.Dont let on about pre-existing conditions if you can help it,IF however you personally know whos doing the work, discuss it with him.
