Ok,I know it's been awhile since I've been here; but I've been real busy.Anyway,My buddy has an 04' PS 4x4.Well,I rode in it today to see what was wrong with it.Seems to have a real bad bumbing sound an feel in the frontend while turning left or right. It's worse the faster you go.I had the wheel turned lock to lock. Then just a little less than lock to lock. Can anyone help me figure this out? Not really a good time to be spending money at our local Ford dealership!!!!!!! Thanks in advance guys
Take it to a Sears and get it diagnosed for free. There is too much stuff up there that can result in that kind of noise. Pretty much and moving joint in the steering gear can do that. Bad damper, ball joints, U-joints, etc.
To diagnose yourself, jack the front end off the ground. Grab the tires at the nort and south poles so to speak, try and wiggle. There should be 0 play in the wheel itself. If it rocks so the tire leans in and out towards the sides, that would be bad ball joints.
Then have someone turn the wheels with someone else watching. You should be able to physically see the steering linkage move in relationship to the wheel, if there is any lag between linkage and wheel movement that would be a bad joint somewhere in there.
You can jiggle everything with your hands, and if anything actually moves that most likely your problem. Everyhitng should be quite tight, and move as one. If it moves without the steering wheel turning, it's broke.
Hope this helps, it's rather difficult giving a front end diagnosis without pictures or in person. Good luck and keep us posted
