My 82 F100 truck has good heat but no A/C. The temp control cable works good and adjust the temp. The lower control arm does nothing but turn off the blower in the off postion. Any other postion ( A/C, heat defrost, floor ) functions does nothing. The air only comes out of the defrost vent on the passenger side. The control has vacuum going to it and it has vacumm going to the switch.
Does this sound like I need to replace the control unit? I replaced the heater core today and cleaned out the housing. The truck had sit for quite a while and had mice living in it.
I'm going to the salvage yard this weekend and was going to pick one up.
Sounds like you may have a vaccuum hose disconnected. Mine did the same thing. There is a control thing that is behind the dash toward the passenger side next to the radio.
While cleaning out my dash I disconnected thos that goes on the driver's side of the control...reconnected it and all worked fine.
I got it figured out. The vacuum hose was broke were it goes into the A/C housing. Fixed it with a piece of rubber vacuum hose. Everything works now execpt the A/C won't kick on. No voltage to the A/C pump. Have to look into that later. At least all the other control functions work.
Find the switch on the accumulator under the hood. Unplug it and short the terminals together, and see if the A/C compressor will run. If it does, then you are low on freon.
I didn't think about the freon being low. I'll try that and see if that works. The truck sat for a long time before I got it. I'm sure the orings in the A/C system are probably shot too. My brother has a vacuum pump for A/C systems he said he could check and see if it had any leaks. Sounds like a summer project.
It is right in front of the A/C unit. About the size and shape of a 12oz pop can. Should have a/c lines connected to it and a switch with wires attached near it.
