I have an '88 F250 XLT 4X4 with the 460/C6. The temp gage has not since I have owned it (4 years) and I am finally getting around to it.
With the key off, the needle rests a little to the right of the "C". With the key on, the needle moves to the left of the "C". I am assuming it is the gage. I have replaced the sending unit on the intake manifold, but get the same results.
I have an Autometer gage I can add, but I like the look of the stock dash. The dealer says the part is obsolete. Any suggestions on fixes or where I can score a new gage? Thanks in advance...
I had the same problem on my 88 F150. I thought of getting one at a junk yard but went ahead and got an aftermarket 3 gauge unit for under dash which includes Temp,Battery and Oil Pres. and really like the accuracy of them. I got the digital ones.
This issue comes up a lot, and what people don't realize is there are 2 temp sensors on these motors, 1 for the computer in the thermostat housing and 1 for the dash gauge. The dash sensor is a small thing in the lower intake with a single wire attached to a stud in the sensor, it's located on the drivers side intake water passage at the front of the motor on the small V8s and probabaly located similarly on the 460.
Thank you all very much for the great advise. Conanski - You shed a light on something for me. There is another small one wire sensor adjacent to the main temp sensor. I will research it and post more soon. Thanks all...

hey conanski aren't they like the oil sending units-you can unplug and ground them and if they max out the gauge is okay?and it's the sending unit instead?
