I don't know why Ford only builds them "one way". I live in an equestrian neighborhood and there is a white 2007 running around that I see all the time. My dealer had a black 2008 a couple of months ago. It looked really nice. I think they are horse people trucks built to tow 5th wheel horse trailers and are more maneuverable.
I can not remember the exact reason off hand, but Ford has only been offering short bed DRW's in black or white for years now. I am sure it has something to do with cost savings on Ford's part. It was the same way back when I ordered my '00...
FYI... There are no short bed DRW's for '09. '08 short bed DRW's could be had in XL, XLT or Lariat trim for sure and possibly FX4. I also see nothing stating that 4.10's were standard on short bed DRW's, so a 6 speed 3.73 is possible if you can find one...
Dealers should be able to search nationwide, but they usually limit their searches to 200-300 miles...
