Upper end noise

Hey guys Im just about at the end of my thread. I just got done putting dual exhuast on my 88 and now since its quiter and has more back pressure I can hear the extent of the upper end noise....I did just get done doing the heads and I did adjust the valve lash but I think maybe I might have performed the operation wrong... The engine did not have this much upper valve train noise before the exhaust and I would like to quiet it down if I can at all.

What I would like to know is how all of you adjust the valve lash. I know that these engines usually have a tick noise to them but this is over the line and when I rev is up I can hear what almost sounds like a bottom end noise coming from the top. All of this goes away when I hold it at about 2 or 3 grand.

Did I mis-adjust my valves? Are my lifters worn way past due? The engine was not doing this prior to the work I did to it....Im just running out of gumption and am looking for a little optimism I guess.

Thanks
TheRon

Hello,
Well, it could be a few things. Look anywhere and you'll find refferences to the upper end noise onthese Cologne engines. It will quite at higher revs due to higher oil pressure. You didn't say how many miles its got on it. Were the valves nasty looking when you did the heads? Were they loose in the head valve guides? If you adjusted per the book, they'll rattle. If it has really high miles the lifters, and cam, will for sure be worn. In my case, I've adjusted the valve lash after the motor was warmed up, with my valve covers off. I put cardboard on the bottom side of the head to keep the oil from being pumped on the exhaust manifolds. I carefully tightened the rocker arm untill the noise stopped on all the cylinders. I know its not the "proper" method but its ran like a top since, including the 4,000 mile hourney up here to Alaska! Good luck.

I'm not saying this is your case but I went as far as replacing the lifters and oil pump on one of my engines in hopes I could get rid of the valve tick. It only helped a little. I found out that one of the main causes in lifter noise in a cologne engine is due to worn cam bearings. I never did replace the bearings. Ended up Hydro locking the engine and it didn't last long after that.
