well if the 390 is stock the half ton running gear will survive just fine, it will be breakable but if you don't punch the throttle with the tires cranked it will survive,
Boggers and 1/2 ton axles is not a good combination. The second those tires are spinning fast and catch hard bottom, or a root/stump/rock etc.... Those axles will snap like a twig. You would get alot of practice changing out axles shafts and probably get pretty good at it.
If you've got the money and really want to build it right, Id go with the sterling/d60 combo. Especially if you are already thinking of 44's.
4.10's will run 35s fine. I run 38's with them. But I am going to regear to 4.56 soon, maybe even lower. If youve got gearing in your budget, go with the 4.56's. That way IF you go bigger youve got the gears to handle it.
As for steering, do a search on Crossover. IMO hydro would be needed for what your planning, and crossover would do just fine.
You will find em for under $900. I got my 91 D-60 for $575 with all the steering parts still on it. If you are looking for a 78/79 your gonna pay a little more..You just gotta keep lookin.
And I paid $175 for my sterling. So they are out there....just gotta look.
I have 33's ON the truck, but its just kind of the roll around tires. I have some 35 boggers in the corner of my shop.
I'm planning for some new bucket seats with upgraded safety harness.
I'm going to keep with 35's. I've set a goal for this truck.
I have a project I want to start but its too expensive to start right now. I already have too many that I don't work on enough. :P

These are concerning my newest project..
I want this thing to be sturdy, but i'm not going to dump ten million dollars into it. (As previously planned.) This will be a trail truck and a mudder. No rock crawling or anything like that.
i thought you were building a project truck?!?! sorry but anyone can go out and slap a set of 35's on any truck and go wheelin without doing too many supporting mods. i mean if you are gonna build a truck then build it. and trust me i know about the money situation. until the past couple of years i worked small and odd jobs just top fund my hobby which i am glad i did.
you need to gather a MUCH more detailed plan of action and what you plan to use and let us help you with your plans. what is this other project truck you are talking about previously? lets hear about this one?
i am so tired of hearing how someone bought some 33's and went and blasted through mud puddles at the local mall. if i could actually get away from work for a few hours i would finish the bronco and go ride with the guys on Nov 8.
and not only do mogs cost a lot but MAN they are spendy on parts alone!
I'm currently restoring a Jeep CJ7 back to stock form. Just making it pretty. Its ready for paint, I just loaned my paint guns out though.
And I have a '67 mustang that i'm putting a 460 in it. I have the 460 down to the block but not much done to it yet. The mustang is stripped down but i'm kind of slow on its body work.
I had a Jeep J10 project that I was working on, but I am trading it to my cousin for his 44 boggers.
And I have my "dream" truck, 44 boggers. But I have yet to get a truck for that yet.
As for your "Not a worthy project" this is not a build thread in anyway, this is more of a pre-build thread. I would like to know what to do with the truck. Its a full time wheeler. The only plans I have for it are stated, and I would like to know what a good idea would be for the rest of the truck.
I read that post like 3 minutes after it went up there and I thought about making a comment but I figured I should leave it to the pros...... I must say Aplha, I expected more from you, being that the thread is from 08.... Haha
