Tranny Problem on 01 SuperCrew

My dad has an 01 SuperCrew 5.4L 2x4 with the 4R70W trans with in the area of 125k on the OD. about two weeks ago dad had the truck out of town and he had a problem when backing up as if the brakes were locked up and had to give it alot of gas to get it to move but it worked fine going foward. well he brought it home and parked it in the drive. the next day we went out to see if we could figure it out. we backed it out of the drive with the same problem. pulled it forward abit and it worked fine. so we put it i nutral to see what it would do...it went into reverse. put it in reverse postion, we get reverse. Neutral, we got reverse. drive, we get drive in all the postions, but it wont drop into last gear. so we backed it into the drive as best we could. we also noticed that we can here it going slam into gear when we shift it. anyways he has left it to sit for the last two weeks and now I am taking the anitiative to atleast try to figure out what is wrong with it. so i though it would post here to see what yall though might be wrong with it.

this has been a great truck for us for almost 8 years and the only problem we had with it before was a fuel pump that was on warrenty. and we want our baby back .

Are you getting any codes? Is the overdrive light flashing at all? Does the overdrive light work?. Has he driven through any high water recently? Just trying to get some info first from you..

You may have damaged the MLPS Sensor, which is the transmission range sensor. It bolts to the side of the transmission.

Yes I would check the sensor that is at the end of the shifter cable, it might have loosened up.

Also what color and how does the tranny fluid smell. It should be a very light red and just have a normal "oil" smell to it, if it smells burnt then you got problems.

The tranny looks nor smells burn and i turned it one for few minutes or so and it the only lights that were on was the low fuel light and the seat belt light, as if i didnt already know i didnt have my seat belt on...

Bobby is the sensor you at talkng about is that the MLPS and if it is the MLPS that is giving us the problems is there a way to adjust it or what?

Im not sure what it is called nor do I know how to adjust it properly. I wish I knew more about auto transmissions so that I could help you.

If I can find my repair manual for my truck, I will look for how to test it and adjustment.

It's actually just called a "Transmission Range" sensor now. This is taken from the service manual:
To adjust the TR sensor without the special tools: detach the shift cable, loosen the sensor retaining bolts, move the sensor slightly until the backup lights come on,then tighten the sensor retaining bolts to the torque of 62-89 in pounds.

Good Luck

we will have to give that a try. is it alright to just tighten the bolts utill they are sung since we dont have any torque wrenches. and im assuming he lights will go off when you tighten the bolts or does the shifter need to be in reverse also.

dad called two different dealers and they both said it sounds like the rear gears have some how welded themselves together. does this sound like it could be possable? cuz i have never heard of gears welding themselves and we are hardly ever rough on the truck.

I'm going to see if i can get my auto mechanic teacher to bring our MODIS to my house to hook it up to see if it is indeed internal troubles or if it is electrical.

I suggest you don't take your truck to those dealers. How could gears "weld" themselfs together?

why don't you just drop the rear driveshaft and put the rear end up on jackstands and see just how much drag you have. Have you checked the rear diff to see if it's full?

What I dont get is how someone could come to the conclusion that somehow the rear end "welded" itself together, when the problem is in the tranny. How is anything that is wrong with the rear end going to make the truck only go into reverse?

Did you ever check to see if the overdrive light works?
