I drive in soft sand quite frequently and it's been my experience over the years that taller tires work better in these conditions.
My 1998 F150 has the stock 235/70/16 tires and I want to change them to 235/85/16. I've also read threads on this message board that these tires would fit the stock rims with no problem...
Sooo...
I was told today by a reputable tire dealer that that size tire would not work on my truck because they are a "load range E tire" (meaning they take up to 80lbs psi and my stock rims would not take that kind of pressure) and also that the tires would probably not even "bead up to the rim."
Has anyone else heard of this? Will I have to change out the stock rims in order to get the tires I want?
Thanks...
Tom

Mine are 245/75/16 on my F250 LD. I switched from the Goodyear to BF Goodrichs, same size, but the BFG are load range E, up from D on the Goodyear. I have not had any trouble. But I don't run 80 psi and I assume you would not need that kind of pressure. I watched them mount them. No problem for that tire size.
I don't understand it either. Maybe the salesman was just giving me teckno babble because he wanted to sell me tires he had in stock rather than trying to work with me??? I'll keep looking.
Thanks for your reply.
Best regards...
Tom
