400M to a 429/460 QUESTION???
I have a friend with a 78-79 F150 4x4 with a 400M, C-6. He needs an engine. He thinks he may of found a 460 engine. I know the C-6, converter, flywheel will bolt up. Will the motor mounts & everything else bolt up with the exception of exhaust pipes? If not what needs to be changed? Oil pan was one thought. Again this is a 4x4.
Thanks, Craig

You will either have to buy new mounts, around $100 or on eBay where I got mine for about $40, solid mounts though.(My Bronco is for competition bogging. NOT on the street much so vibration doesn't bother me any.)
My motor came from a 74 Mark IV and I used the car exhaust manifolds (for now till I get headers). I just cut the down pipe from the car and rotated it away from the frame for a TEMPORARY fix. I plan on getting fender well exit headers this winter AFTER I swap axles.
I have a 4 inch lift on my Bronco, so the oil pan clears, but watch for hard suspension compression with a lift. Stock suspension, better change it!

By the way,, He will most likely need to watch for alt. clearance if it is a car motor, and power steering pump bracket may be out of wack. I used the Bronco hoses and just re-bent them to clear, and had to tie them back from rubbing.
Best I can say, be prepared and watch for clearance issues on the mentioned parts.

You can run the drivers side car manifold with out notching the frame. But the pass. side needs to go more straight back instead of down. I see these on ebay alot. That is how it is on my truck. I used the car mounts with 360 towers and just drilled a hole from front to back and installed the car bolt. It would look and be better if you had more proper mounts, but I didn't have much cash at the time and been that way for years. No problems.

If it has the front sump pan he is going to want to change the pan, pickup and oil pump (front and rear sump applications use a different oil pump) even if he has a lift and it clears if you pull the plug on a front some pan it drains directly onto the front diff. you can buy a rear sump pan, pickup and dipstick tube combo from Ford for about $150 that will work last time I checked, summit also carries it.

just add an oil pump of your choice for rear sump applications.
you can also go ask for one for a 94 7.5 in a F250 4x4 and get the rear sump but not sure if that will be the complete deal including pickup and dip stick. the kit part number from ford is M-6675-A460, the pan only number from ford is F3TZ6675A
You mentioned the flywheel, but those are NOT interchangeable between the 400 and the 460, good news is the 460 flywheel WILL bolt up so not a big issue.
grab as much accessories stuff as you can off the 460 donor as the alt, PS etc mounts don't interchange between the motors although I have successfully done the torch to fit paint to match routine.
As for motor mounts, L&L makes a swap mount but I prefer this one
