NFL coaches

Who's your favorite NFL coach(es) and why?

Name as many as you want, and in order of who your favorites are/were.

Tony Dungy, hands down. Always keeps his cool, doesn't get down on his players, but encourages them. Just a class act all around.

Cowher (rhymes with 'hour' in da Burg). Great intensity for the good or the bad.

I did admire Tom Landry. He had class. But my favorite was Bill Walsh.

And look at his coaching tree:

An oldie but a goodie, Bud Grant! You've gotta love the guy who kicked Howard Cossell out of his locker room.

Dungy's a great guy too, and he reminds me of Grant in a lot of ways. The only thing that seems to be missing is the subtle sense of humor.

While we're talking coaches, I wish they'd take their radios away! I'm sick and tired of camera shots of the great coach at the helm, leading his team -- program covering his face, so the other guys can't read his lips.

It was a better game when the QB pretty much ran things.

It's tough to place them in any kind of order.

Don Coryell - He loved to air it out, and his teams were exciting to watch.

Marv Levy - His teams were well prepared, and competitive every week.

How could you not like Bum Phillips?

George Allen - a real motivator (and he used old guys)

Hank Stram - always seemed to field a quality team (in KC, anyway)

X2 on Hank Stram - "Matriculate down the field"

He would try some goofy stuff - his experiment with Morris Stroud, a 6'10" wide receiver. Great coaches invariably had a great QB too - Len Dawson.

I can't believe no one has even hinted towards Vince Lombardi...you know the guy who has the Super Bowl trophy named after him. While maybe not the best coach, but he is quite legendary. I believe he ranks right up there with Tom Landry. I also can't believe no one said anything about Chuck Knoll. And I may get a couple chuckles out of this but...what John Madden did in his only 10 years as a head coach has got to be second to none. And as already stated, Shula is quite legendary in his own right. I believe ol' Tony Dungy will be regarded as one of the best "player's coaches" of all time when he's done.

Oh sorry...just figured someone would have named the coaches I suggested as a possible favorite...but since they didn't I guess I'll pick up the slack...haha.

Vince Lombardi: Great teams of the era...really knew how to motivate players. Very disciplined. Besides I'm a cheesehead at heart.

Chuck Knoll: Seriously, does this guy even need an introduction. Coach of probably the best team(s) of the era when football was really football...so how is it possible not to like the guy.

John Madden: Did more with nothing than any coach I've ever seen. Turned bad players into good players and good players into stars. Had a pretty good win percentage too, and made a respectable franchise in only 10 years.

lombardi is definately one of the all time greats without a doubt, and shula was my favorite in the 80's and early 90's, as i used to be a huge dolphins fan, but that organization and coach failed to put a solid team around marino (my favorite all time qb,even though ive been a pats fan since 93-94 when i moved to mass, and obviously a brady fan) that organization wasted marinos talents.....and what have they done since marino to fill that void? nothing, and im not surprised.......they also passed on brady quinn
