My brother bought a used chevy malibu from a ford dealer. He bought an extended warranty from them. I looked at his paperwork and it says the warranty is premicare. They explained that all he needed was to use his vin at a ford dealer for repairs. This sounded like esp coverage, but how could a ford warranty cover a chevrolet?
Extended Service Plans are simply insurance policies on vehicles...just as life insurance is insurance on your life. Fords top of the line plan is called Premium Care and is available on used non-Ford vehicles under certain parameters. Believe it or not...these policies aren't generally big money makers for the manufacturers...but...they can be big moneymakers for the dealers.
There are also plenty of "aftermarket" companies that sell warranties with similar sounding names. These are generally less expensive...less inclusive...and harder to file a claim and get it approved. You should be wary of these.
