Hey,

How do you know when your Glow plugs are going bad? I have Champion Glow plugs in there now and I know they are crap plugs.

Today I was driving and it started Shuttering like I was out of gas then it would stop. It was making the noise when you start your truck without the glow plugs warmed. That is what is leading me to think I might have some bad glow plugs. I dont know much about diesels so I could be wrong. Just wondering if someone could tell me the symptoms of Bad plugs. Or what would cause shuttering and sometimes motor just shutting off.

You said that the truck was sputtering after being started, is this when its cold or already warmed up. While your driving the glow plugs shouldnt be running. They are only used to start the truck, they run 8-10 seconds and then go on and off for a very short time after the truck is started.

If the truck is sputtering while running I would check to see if there is anywater in the water seperator. How long has it been since its been changed?

Also, ya need to get rid of those crappy plugs, some quality Beru DB9's will work better and last a lot longer.

It does sputter after being starter for a few seconds then it runs fine... and for the rest of the day it starts fine... or it did until today. I was sitting at a light and it was running normal then it started spitting and sputtering like it was running out of diesel....Cuase I have run out before and I know how it acts. I had a little less then a quarter tank and That is still plenty to run on. Then I took off at the light and I was running like 35 mph and it cut off on me totally... I pulled over and is started up but was still spitting and sputtering For a few, so i ran to the nearest Gas station and as I was pulling in it cut off again as I was pulling in, So I put some diesel in it ran fine till I got to my next job and it cut off when I stopped at the customers house.I left and it made it home. I am not sure if my gas gauge is messed up or something. I am clueless here.

there is a schrader valve on the top of the fuel filter housing, have someone crank the engine while you push in the valve, see if fuel comes out; if not loosen the line coming from the supply pump down on the block to the filter housing and see if any fuel is getting to the filter (by cranking). Let us know what happens.

there is a problem with the pick up tube inside the tank of these trucks and it'll stall when you get around 1/4 tank.

I know what you are talking about I had to do that once.... But if there was no fuel coming out it would not run right? It is running now just has its spells.

So do I need to fix that? Or do I need to run it above 1/4 of a tank? I have two tanks but the guage does not work on the other tank so I only use one.

sounds like you have 2 problems; run or repair at your discretion.

Well one problem, I am not worried about the second tank. I cant afford to fill two tanks. Sorry I dont know much about diesels. So where would you start? I mean should I try filling it up and running it or what?

I had this happen to me and it turned out that the screw on the bottom of the water seperator had worked itself lose and was leaking while the truck was running. It would be driving around perfectly fine and then stall out in the middle of the street. Try tightning the screw up and see if it helps. It solved my problem, but I had to tighten it down with a pair of vice grips to prevent it from coming lose again.

Yeah, it was leaking diesel right out the bottom, at idle you really coundnt tell, but when the motor was reved it dripped a decent amount. I new I smell diesel, but being that I hadnt had the truck very long at that time, I couldnt determine where it was coming from until I check the water sperator.

Also, my pickup tube recently broke when I ran my tank completly dry, it runs out at anywhere from 1/8 to a 1/4 of a tank, but it doesnt shutter it surges and acts like it has a turbocharger.

(It makes me want to get one of mine installed, its kinda fun being put back in the seat with out ever expecting it)

along with that thought about the screw on the bottom of the water separator leaking and needing tightening up, they have a rubber washer inside that will wear out just like on a water faucet in the house. i pulled the washer out of mine...leaking like screen door no matter HOW tight i had the screw...and went to the hardware store and went to the plumbing section and found a faucet washer the correct size and voila! no more leaking from the bottom. now if i could just find time to replace the steering gear box.
