I have a 78 F150, that originally came with a 2 tank setup. By the time I got the truck, it had only the rear 19 gallon tank in it. Well, needless to say, with a 400, it doesn't get very good gas milage. I want to put in a 35 gallon tank (in the back). I swear I saw someone that sold a tank and pickup for this, but as usual, now that I need it, I can't find it.
I don't want to put the second (midship) tank back in, I always hated the 2 tank setup.(my parent's had a 79 that way)
Any help? Thanks,
Matt
p.s. what are you guys out there with 78-79 F150's getting in gas milage? I get 10 no matter what I do. City, highway, offroad..
Matt,
J.C.Whittney sells a 35 or 40 gallon tank,with the sending unit,mounting straps,pump,etc. I think they have a web site at www.jcwhittney.com

What I was actually looking for, instead of a fuel cell, is a replacement rear gas tank for this truck.. I swear I've seen em before..
Thanks anyways (btw, the wep address isn't correct)
Matt,
I just found my catalog, they have a 38 gallon replacement tank for 73-89 Ford Full Size Pick Ups.It says that you must relocate your spare tire though. cost is $249.95. I typo'd the web address,it is www.jcwhitney.com(only 1 t ). they have a few other types in the catalog also, some as high as 45 gallons for Fords.
Jeff
make sure you get the dimensions of the tank and it fits your truck. I ordered that big tank from JC Whitney and had to send it back. My 73 ford has a 34 inch frame and that tank fits a 38 inch frame.
I've had terrible trouble with JC Whitney and their gas tanks. They have a 2 listings for the big tank, with and w/o emissions hole. The part numbers are messed up and they shipped the wrong tank twice. The 38 gallon tank is made by American design ( a Canadian company, go figure... ) and can be ordered through Advance Auto, a better bet in my opinion. This tank dosen't include a new sending unit however, it uses the original unit from the 19 gallon tank and registers full until the level drops below 19 gal. My '77 F150 w 351M gets 9-10 mpg.
I have a 79 with a 44 gal. tank mounted aft of axle(short bed stepside) It came complete with sending unit, heavy duty straps that do not use spacers, and a new fuel filter. I purchased this directly from a company called Northwest Metal Products, phone #(503)-359-4427. Total cost was just over 350 bucks to my door(about 2 yrs ago). This is a "custom" made tank, it is made of very heavy gauge steel and is fully baffled which I consider a must. It does hang down a bit under the rear bumper but has in no way limited the departure angle. I do run 3" lift coils with the rear bumped up to level the truck with about a half a tank. As far as gas milage-well lets just say that even with heavy mods to boost low end I still only get about 11-12 mpg around town, got between 14 and 16 mpg during a 4,000 mile highway trip this summer(full blast a/c, cruisin' with them big rigs)running 35" rubber and 4.10's. Sorry I couldn't respond earlier! Been away for awhile! Good luck with whatever you decide!! Chuck P.
I have a 79 F-250 4X4 400m with 4.10 rear and 33X12.5 tires. I just changed the stock two-barrel carb for a edelbrok intake and 600 cfm carb. My gas mileage went from 9 to 12. Hard to believe!
just by listening to these trucks run you can tell that they DEMAND more than the stock 2 barrel carb.. I've got the Edelbrock intake (non-egr as I don't have to worry about emissions) and 600cfm manual choke carb on my waiting list..
I didn't think that it'd improve quite that much..considering you'd probably be at WOT more often =-)
I'll be giving them a call on the tanks...btw, you've got your truck setup exactly (with the exception of mine being a long bed) how I want mine setup..I might go for a 2 inch body lift over the 3" front coils though..
