I have a94 f150 with a 302. When I start it cold it sounds like a diesal truck. After a few minutes ideling it quites down and is fine. I bought this truck about two months ago and it has always been like this, I have not changed to oil yet and plan on that this week. Also my gas mileage sucks. I am getting 10 mpg around town and I am really gentle on the peddel and not hot rodding at all. In reading some other threads I am wondering if there may be an egr problem or exhaust leak, but after it warms up it is fine, other than poor gas mileage.
155k mileage, auto, AC, Supercab Shortbed.
I have a ford filter I will use when I change the oil.
Any suggestions/ideas?
Try to track down where the noise is coming from. Exhaust manifold leak is a possibility, sealing up when it warms up. Put a half can of Seafoam in the fuel tank to start cleaning up the fuel system. Check air filter, PCV valve and change the oil. Pull the plugs to see how it's burning, bad cylinder etc. These may help the mileage a little, but you need to narrow down that noise a little.
10mpg is terrible.. exactly how have you determined it is this bad?
First step in finding a problem is to pull the codes, ground the STI wire in the EEC test harness, turn the key to run and count the flashes on the check engine light. See here Ford Fuel Injection for info about doing the self test and code definitions.
To cure the rattly cold start get that Fram oil filter off there ASAP and replace it with a Motocraft FL-1A.
Well it does not have a fram filter, it has a FL-1A, I have run about 6 tanks of gas and each is about the same for gas mileage. I have changed the air filter. Going to do a oil change tonight and PCV valve too. There are no leaks on the motor, it is real clean, no leaks on the ground either.
I will try and narrow the sound down.
OK.. so you have to determine if the noise is mechanical or exhaust related, when you said it sounded like a diesel I took that to mean mechanical noises. There is a steel tube running across the back of the motor connecting ports in the heads that lead to the exhaust, this is part of the thermactor system(air injection). If this tube or the attached check valve is rusting out it will produce an exhaust leak that can be hard to find.
Could be "piston slap". I work on...yuk...Hondas and come across it quite often. GM and Ford both had problems with it. Do a Google search for "piston slap" and you can read as much about it as you care to! It lasts longer the colder the weather gets. May not be your problem, but COULD be.
