This truck's 4 wheel drive does not work when it is shifted into 4H or 4L. If there is a problem with one of the lock out hubs not engaging will this keep the 4 wheel drive from working? Thanks for any help!
yes one hub stuck in the unlocked position will cause no 4x4, it will just spin the one front axle shaft freely inside that hub. If you want to tell us what kind of hubs you have I or someone else will give you some advice as to dis assembly and cleaning, and what to look for for broken stuff.
Thanks for getting back to me! First of all how do you ID the tranfer Case and Hubs? I know nothing about this truck, it is located at Father-in-laws and I'm trying to help him ID the problem over the phone.
does your t case shift lever say 4lo, N, 2hi, 4hi from front to back? or have 4lo and 4lo lock and 4hi and 4hi lock. The first one is an np205 and the second an np203. doesn't really matter though. tell me what your hubs look like, they have red centers that say FORD, or gold centers that say WARN, or black plastic center that says WARN? All these hubs come apart differently. I don't know what makes you think one is sticking unlocked but it is the first thing I would be checking if my 4x4 wasn't working. Just let me know which ones you've got and I will walk you through as best I can.
I had the same problem in a f-150 I had. It had the red ford hubs on it and due too some pitting and lack of lubrication in the hub it wouldn't engage. You should be able to tell if its the hubs or the transfercase if you engage the transfer case but not the hubs and crawl underneath. (you don't need the truck running, and make sure it can't roll on you!) If you can spin the front drive shaft with the t case in 4 HI or 4 LO and the hubs out I would bet its the tcase. If you can't spin the front drive shaft I would bet on the hubs.
