Here is a problem my mechanic has been unable to solve:
Have 86 F-150 351cu 4wd.... With hubs locked out, the steering intermitantly pulls to the right in a short jerking fashion. With hubs locked in, (but not in 4wd) the problem goes away.... Tie rods, steering arm, ball joints, wheel bearings all good. Front end alignment done. Frame is solid... We have done a thorough inspection of front end while moving steering back & forth to identify anything loose or sloopy... Everything tight... Tires in good shape with no obvious signs of a problem there.
Any suggestions as to what the problem might be, very much appreciated... Thanks...
Possible tire starting to separate, check air press. Cross ft tires left to right see if it goes away or pulls left. Could also be the ps gearbox. a bad gearbox will sometimes cause the steering wheel to move when you start the truck.
Is it possible the hub on one side is not really disengaging? Lock and unlock the hubs with the wheels off the ground and see if they work correctly. You could also take the cog out to disable the hub and see if the problem goes away.

We have looked at tires closely... they are Coopers and are only two years old.. air pressure is same on all tires and up to spec... I was wondering about a possible power steering unit problem but mechanic says no. No movement on startup....... Might try rotating tires up front... will see what happens.......jk

Will give that a try... sounds plausable... Thank for your suggestion...
