I have partially converted my '81 F100 to 4x4 with an '84 TTB. I have on hand a NP435 trans, NP208 T-case, and 8.8 L/S rear axle. I had my AOD rebuilt a couple years ago. My questions are is it worth it to find parts to convert the AOD to 4x4 use or use the NP435. I'll use the NP208 transfer case with either one. I also will swap in the 8.8 rear axle as my 9" is worn out and has the wrong lug spacing. Any advice would be appreciated.
The NP435 is one bulletproof transmission, no doubt about that, and has a lovely granny low, but if you do any highway driving of any consequence, get prepared for 65mph or so, max, if you have any axle gearing at all.
The AOD, on the other hand, has the torque multiplication inherent in automatics plus an overdrive for high speed low-RPM highway driving.
Be honest with yourself--what DO you do with this truck for most of its miles? If you decide to keep your recently rebuilt automatic, throw money at Summit or somebody and get the biggest oil radiator you can buy.
If you want to sell the 435, E-Mail me, selt@flash.net.

I'm not familiar with the transfer case your using , but something which might be possible is to use a divorced t-case set up. You would need to fab a crossmember for the case and maybe modify the front with a yoke to accept a short drive shaft from the trans to the t-case. I know some NP205 cases were divorced from the factory. Anyway, its something to think about.
Thanks for the advice. I just got back into town and started my search for a divorced 205 transfer case. Im getting the rearend ready to install now. I have an 83 bronco frame with the correct rear spring perches so I am removing them along with the springs. I checked the wrecking yards and the leaf springs look the same between the bronco that I have and the truck except for the overload leaf wich I'll take off the springs I've got. Am I right, or is the rear brake hardware between the 2x4 and the 4x4 the same? I know the shoes and drums are different, but the rest of it looks the same. NAPA has a different master cylinder for the 4x4 as well. Can I asume that the wheel cylinders are different?
Thanks, Mark.
