Found a large puddle of gas under my old "non ford vehicle" while doing yard work today. I pulled it into the garage and found a small pinhole in the bottom. Made a trip to crappy tire far an epoxy kit which claimed it worked with fuel in the tank. I will claim it's a piece of *****. Frustrated I took off the tank, drained it out and opened the gas gauge float filter door. The tank looks new inside??? there are some dead bugs, mouse crap and a huge gob of solder floating around. So I'm thinking the problem is rust from the outside in. There was at least 40 years of dirt and gravel stuck under, over and in- between the straps and the tank shields.
Whats the best fix? Por 15 the outside? Line the inside? Anyone have any similar experience?
The best answer to this question is to replace it (Im sure you knew that though!!)
I could understand if ya cant find, or dont wanna spend the extra cash on it.
You could weld it, but you have to be cautious while welding, and also where the rust is. You may be trying to weld to rust.
Ive heard of guys using jb weld, but again if it all depends n how rusty it is.
Por15 would cover the tank nice, but just that probably wouldnt stop the actual leak.
Seal-All has always worked real well for me. I`ve even sealed a leak with Seal-All while the gas was slowly dripping!
This will get you by depending on how long you plan on keeping your "non Ford vehicle".........
I used it to seal up some major holes years ago on my torino, Booze cruising in the middle of the night in the middle of a field and drove over a rock pile. It filled some pretty large holes and worked very well.
I have notice that a full tank of fuel will give me a gas smell but i didn't see any leaks. I did find the rubber vent tube has a split at the end, so i'll shorten it up a bit.
The tank is out, and cleaned up. Went to walkers today and got the por-15 gas tank sealer kit Fuel System Restoration-POR-15 Inc.. I'm going to try it out tomorrow and thinking of coating the outside with the leftover that pours out of the inside.
Everything appears to have worked! This product will stick to anything it seems. There was tons of sealer left over after coating the inside and outside of the tank, I wish i had something else that could have been painted. The one problem I had and am still having is the fact that they want you to drain all the paint out of the tank after 30 min, but the filler neck protrudes about 2 inches into the tank and will not drain out all the paint. I have manged to use a paint brush to pull the excess out of the pickup tube hole and i keep rotating it so it wont puddle in one spot. I'm very pleased with the job and the simplicity of it all, and wouldn't hesitate to use it again. My tank was very clean and almost all rust free, i wonder what it would be like on an old rusty unit.
i seal even a brand new tank because no ones perfect, since you had it out anyway i think you did the right thing. O BTW nice talking to you again eric.
