Anyone have any good suggestions on removing the ball joints(upper and lower)on a Dana 44 IFS? I have the knuckle all the way off so if I can't do it I will just take it to a shop.
Thanks
Man, if you can take the knuckle off, I'm pretty darn sure you can get the old ball joints out. Start by removing the snap rings that are on the edge of the ball joints. You will need either a BIG VISE or PRESS to provide a SOLID work bench. You may need to bang the joint in the opposite direction to free the snap ring. Then, using a suitable size STEEL PIPE or STOCK and a MAUL or SLEDGE HAMMER(disregard if you have a press, 'cause if you did you wouldn't have asked for help-lol), drive the old joint out. To install the new ones, carefully clean the bores with emery cloth, not to much though, and lube the bores with gear oil or grease. Then you will need a pipe that just catches the outer edge of the joint to drive in the new ones. Be very careful not to place force on the thin, stamped area of the ball joint, only apply force to the forged areas. It would be more desirable to use a large vise and properly sizes sockets to squeze the new joints in place,or better yet a press, then using a hammer and pipe to drive the new ones in.If you have doubts, take it to somebody that doesn't.

its works best if you can get to a upright 20 ton press. that is what we used when i worked at Napa. Also if you get the Fleet Tough ball joints that Napa offers....thoes are good ones...i had thoes in my lower and the were fine...and they are greeseable too...jsut a thought.....
Hey Dan, "were" Fleet-Tuf is correct--Moog HD upper and lower are in now. I paid a shop $20.00 to mash them out and in correctly. I would have loved to go back in with all Dana HD parts but there was a LARGE difference in price between NAPA (Dana) and Carquest (Moog). BTW, that front end should go in on the last weekend in February or first weekend in March.
