uhhh rear gear problem?

ok went to do the axle seal on the passenger side of my truck today..95 f-150 ford 8.8 rear axle...anyways pulled the diff cover, brakes and what not went to pull the pinion shaft out, the retaining bolt (if that what you call it) isnt even long enough to reach the pinion shaft to begin with then on top of that the pinion shaft would NOT come out...they should slide right out or am i stupid...it had about 1/16 inch of vertical movement and was loose but i just wouldnt budge past that bit of play so lots of cursing an swearin later i said to hell with it put er all back together with new oil

any ideas as to why it was being such an ***

thanks for your help

just had the same problem -the retaining bolt is probably broke off-you have my sympathy
I ended up using a brass drift and beating the retaining shaft out-it wasn't easy or pretty-had to pull another retaining pin and bolt out of another rear-good luck

Yea if I remember right the pinion retainer bolt is threaded only for the first half or so, then a thin pin extends beyond that to retain the pinion shaft. Only 5/32 or so in diameter? Or about half the diameter of that bolt itself.

That pin must have snapped off the end of the bolt, you may get lucky and move the pinion shaft around enough to use a magnet/vibration to remove that piece of it.

yeah we tried the magnet and dental pick things-mine was just not coming-the problem seems to be the threads extend past the part that threads into the hole and it won't just come out-really is a pain!!!
as I said I wish him luck-maybe he might get lucky with a small magnet?
