its been a while since i posted, a new job and 2 kids got married,a allstate scooter project, while! and now it time to get back on track!
quick back ground, i have a 49 f-3 that i planned to convert to a f-1 and install a jag ifs and irs. i have f-1 box, sbc and tranny, 86 xj6 recently i've come a cross a 51 or 52 f-1 clean frame and only a frame, no axils. A
now here is my questions,
All f-1 are the same, right?
Is there any drawing / cutaways (or someone personal measurement) out there that will help me install both irs and ifs blind? with only the frame and the irs and ifs. As space is a problem (winter coming to minnesota)and i don't have room for a frame and a tore down f-3, I'm hoping to work on the frame only ( irs, ifs install, frame boxing, X member, and power train install) and leave the f-3 in storage (2hrs away) so measurment on locating the ifs and irs on the frame is what i'm looking for.
I would buy the F-1 frame if it is good and $ are reasonable. I am not aware of any differences in F-1 frames. Locating the Jag IFS will not be an issue. I just buried my 49 but others such as Rusty should be able to get you the fore and aft measurement. I have provided the measurement in the past but cannot seem to locate it on the forum. Rusty also did the IRS. one suggestion that I would make is to shift the engine mounts/engine at least an inch to the passengers side. This will open up clearance with the R&P allowing more options for headers.
In summary, I would not be concerned with working off the bare frame locating the Jag IFS and IRS. There are enough of us on the forum that have btdt to help you thru the process. I say go for it!
axman; Look up steel48; I used the measurements he put on his IFS install on mine. Read it and it will explain all you need to know about the IFS. I bought a cross member from TCI (total cost involved) for my IRS. I installed it right over the bump stops on my frame. The pumpkin bolts to the four holes in the cross member. You have to fab your own radius rods and stablizer bars for the rear housing. I'm not finished yet but it's not that hard to do just takes time. I also set my sbc 1'' to the pass side to allow room for the headers to pass the steering rod. Any more Q's just ask I'll do my best to answer or some one else will. RUSTY
thanks lot guys, this is the information i was looking for. it will help me locate my axils and double check it with mearusements to get it accrete ( that was my fear) and i sure that will be more question along the way, alot more.
i found the frame at a small post war junk yard for 300 bucks. good deal, bad deal, not sure ,to me it is becouse i can keep(start) moving ahead. and they will buy my f3 rolling frame when i get that far.
rusty and willard i've been following your progress for sometime and love the pictures.
willard what is the ride height at with your install? thanks fo the tip on shifting the motor over one 1" your pictures speak volumes.
rusty i checked out steel48 galley, good stuff ! i'm looking at Snow White Ltd. - Street Rod Specialists for my irs install kit or make my own. where to you plan on puting your shock mount ?
kent, thanks for the link to cutaway drawing i have printed it out on 11x17 sheet so mi can get a veiw
thanks again
axman, The lower flange of the frame rail at the front is 11" off the ground. I have not driven it and I would expect that it could settle another inch. As mentioned above take a look at 48 Steel gallery for photos and locating the Jag IFS.
willard thanks for the ride height info it in the ball park of my wants.i,m thinking 8"-10" and there is some adjustment with the jag after install.
i have study 48steel galley, along with yours and rusty(and i mean STUDY)
havi, we might be able to work something out, but it won't be in a will, next sping at the early eariest.
