I've been enjoying my new gauges for a while now and, of course, keep a keen eye out on the boost gauge. I drive like an old woman in order to keep my mpgs up; in town I rarely get up over 2k rpms so my boost is around 5 psi. When merging on the freeway (all of this without load) I get up to 2.5k rpms and the boost hits 10. This weekend I'm putting a load (7,000 lbs) on and will hit the local mountain to see what the boost will be.

I was worried initially about the low boost figures but none of the four upper boots seems to be leaking (will check the spyder boots this weekend). I will also check my up pipes to see if any soot is present indicating leaks. The engine seems very powerful (mind you, the DP is not yet hooked up; got the control switch in and the connecting cord; just have to pull the PCM).

Then I started reading about turbos and boost and it seems that the higher PSIs don't start coming on until you hit WOT and/or do a load; in other words, the turbo boost only comes on when the engine computer senses that it is necessary. One way to test this, is to rev the engine up while in park - even at 3k rpms the boost is still very minimal because there is no load on the engine.

So low boost may not be symptomatic of any worries.

The turbo works off exhaust velocity, pressure, and temperature. More load on the engine, more heat and pressure built up in the pre-turbo exhaust. Compressor accelerates and stuffs air into the engine, that then goes out of the engine into the exhaust side and spools it more, in a nice cycle. I could get 5 or so psi in neutral.
