Dana 44 gears

I want lower gears for my truck (89 F150 4x4) and am considering swapping ring and pinion. Since I am always in a constant state of flux, I may want to swap in a Dana 44 solid axle in the future. The question is, would I be able to swap the ring and pinion from the stock IFS to the Solid axle. It seems like it should since they would be physically the same size, but does it work in practice? Thanks

Rob

I have heard that they are not interchangeable. But I could be very much wrong. Anyone know for sure?

The ring and pinion are the same from a solid axle reverse cut as from an IFS reverse cut, or reverse rotation. Only difference is from the case out, axleshafts have an extra u-joint and a splined slip joint on the IFS, as far as I know the spline counts are the same both. Chuck P.

I just picked up my regeared Dana 44 TTB from 4WD Wholesalers. While we were in negotiations regarding carrier pricing, the remark was made by the salesman that "...a 44 is a 44, inside they don't know the difference..." Dynatrac and Currie and so forth have 800 numbers, give 'em a call and get some straight info. Myself, I'm inclined to go with the above post and match high-pinion parts with high-pinion, low with low as far as ring and pinion gears only, and assume that everything else is standard to a set design.
By the way, 4WD Wholesalers do excellent setup work, and if you do your homework you can really beat them up on pricing.

Dana 44 gears

Hi,
Here's what I know about dana 44s. The 3.73 and numerically higher gears use a different carrier than the 3.55 and numerically lower gears, so if you're crossing over that line, the carrier must be changed. There is no difference between a carrier for a reverse cut gear and a carrier for a standard rotation gear, but, there is another difference. There's what's called a large bearing carrier, and a small bearing carrier. These carriers and their internals (spiders, etc.) are not interchangeable. Ther are also at least 3 different spline counts on the axle shafts (and spiders). It is not uncommon to come across a 1/2 ton Ford with a small bearing carrier, but most are large. Some of the solid axle front dana 44s are reverse cut and some are not, so you need to look at that while shopping for one too.
I've got a big pile of 44 guts here, and I can tell you that FWPW said is not correct. As far as gears go, they are all the same with the exception of the reverse and standard rotation, and the two different ratio ranges. As for the carrier, there are at least 4 different ones, not including the limited slips and lockers: High ratio small bearing; high ratio large bearing; low ratio small bearing; low ratio large bearing.
Anyway, have fun with your project.

Later,
Jon
