Hi,guy's.. I have a 71'f250 crew cab 4x4, it has a dana 44 front end, the knuckles are huge!!! alot bigger than a standard 44 knuckle ,like my 71'f250 high boy pick/up. I guess it's a heavy duty axle, but i'm not sure of the gvw???? I also had a freind tell me that parts are hard to find????? is that true???? the front end also has external hubs that bolt to the hub/not inserted inside the hub like some of the newer trucks.. does this heavy duty axle come under every crew cab or was it a option???? if you have any info. please let me know?? before i start this project this summer..
Hey there. I have the same axle that I just put under my 79 f250. From what I have found out, these axles are supposed to be part of a DANA 60 axle, but they can just bold onto the 44's. Yes. It is very hard to find parts. Mine is down, until I find a new spindle. unless I want to spend $300. If you have any spare parts, or any ideas where I can get parts. HELP! Other than that, it is a really good setup!
If the axel code for is a letter code behind the rear axel number on the door jamb if it is a (K)
its an Dana 6CF HD I have this axel in my
72 Crew Cab 4X4 I have found the seals at Hicks
4x4 www.hicks4x4.com.
Yes, the one reply is correct. The 6CF-HD is the large nuckled axle. The parts are a little harder to find and a little more expensive, but the tradeoff for strength is worth it. The hubs and larger shaft u-joints are very hard to break compared to the regular 44. I rebuilt my 71' 44-6CF about six months ago and it cost about $1,200 for everything from bearings to 4.88 gears and a detroit locker. Not bad I think!
