When i started the truck ran, had no power at all!, stock 2 barrel intake, stock two barrel carb, stock junk cam shaft, stock exhaust manifolds, stock junk heads....notice a trend??? I order a new lunati voodoo cam shaft (part number 61002 if u want the specs) ,valve springs to match the cam, Weiand Steath intake manifold, hedman long tube headers, ford racing aluminum valve covers, all threw summit racing. I tore into it and toke the heads to scotts performance engine center in st. henry to get the bowls polished, and ported the heads gasket matched to the intake, and a comp 1 valve job. Well turns out the engine had been rebuilt before! and someone had done a crapy job on the cylinder heads so they were shot.... o joy... Well turns out they had a set of heads with most of the work done. Got them for 200 bucks, just needed new valves. The heads had already been set up for screw in rocker studs (much better). Scott threw in a set of roller tip rockers for 20 bucks cause they were used ( very cool ). And they put in all new valves. They told me that these heads flowed suprisingly nice. To help the motor wind up into the power band faster i got a set of 4.56 gears for it. ( thats a lot lower than the 3.00's that it has now) The cost on all this new found power...... ask me when i am done....right now... lets just say that its got three 0's in it and i haven't touched the bottom end! I have high hopes for it even though its a 302. anybody want to give me an idea what kind of power i might be pushing? any comments would be cool too.
well the shop that did my heads is one of the best in my area and they really know their stuff. he showed me a 347 stroker he built that put out over 400 ft of torque at the crank. as far as tires go i am on 31's right now but i will be putting 35's on it this winter and then who knows from there. Its a mud bog truck is what it is. I was shooting for at least 250 hp so 300 sounds great but i am not one to over shoot my guess so i am sticking with 250 till i strap it to a dyno this spring in vincennes. then we will see what she does.
Just so you know flywheel HP and rear wheel HP will be very different numbers, you loose 20% through an automatic driveline and another 5-10% with really big tires.
yes i am aware of the power lose. I already had another one of my trucks on the dyno in question. my 81 with a 300 inline six. it put 95 hp to the ground threw a 4 speed manual. i can't remember the torque number but it was over 200ftp
