If you look at the DLC (Data Link Connector) with the wide side being top, pin 1 is top left. Pins 1-8 are on the top row and 9-16 are on the bottom...
y bother its gonna come a bite you in the *** an it only saves u a lil bit its jus another way for the ins company to watch how you drive to me not worth the $10 savings
Hi, I'm from Progressive and saw your question about why our device has so many pins. Different cars have different ways of sending information through the OBD port. Some send the information we need through one set of pins, while other cars send it through a different set. The MyRate device was designed to fit in every car, so we included all of the pins we could potentially need--but in the end the device only uses the set that works for that car. I also wanted to clarify the information we collect. The MyRate program uses information about your mileage, the time of day you drive and the number of hard brakes to determine your rate. While we capture some other information from the device - like your VIN to verify your car and your speed - we don't use it to set your rate. We don't use GPS, so we don't know where a car is or measure lane changes. We also have a Web site with more information including commonly asked questions that we get about the program - MyRate Program - Safe Drivers Can Save Money on Auto Insurance. Feel free to check it out.
while i understand why you are doing, I would never do that. Heck they might even be able to tell where you went. Say you went out on a friday night to the local bar. Then they will assume you have been drinking. so there goes your rates, you are a greater risk.
This little device only tells half the story. What if I am out testing my trailer brakes and make 10 hard stops in 20 minutes? My rates go up even though I am driving safely.
There is no freakin' way I would put something on that on my vehicle. I didn't even know they existed, wtf is wrong with people today? If you slam on the brakes a thousand times a day and still have no tickets or accidents why should you pay more? Drive here in new orleans and these fools around here cut you off all the time, what kind of way is that to determine your risk? I can promise you that one day a device like that will be used against you and the info will be twisted to make you look like a horrible driver if it benefits whoever owns the device. The ins. company can spin it any way they want, that device will not benefit you, just them. It amazes me what kind of crap people are willing to put up with today from corporations and the government what happened to common sense? Soon everything we do and everywhere we go will be documented or recorded in one way or another and things like this facilitate that and make it more acceptable to the public, wtf? I have a couple of policies to cover my bus. and personal vehicles, have switched one to progressive a couple of years ago becuase the rates are cheaper, but after learning this I will be cancelling the progressive policy, what do you think of that srouser? Stuff like this really pisses me off.
just think of the ingenious guy that figures out a way to fool the device. either way i think it is a bad idea. i dont like the idea of a black box on my truck either. ill stick with my company

Lets give the other side of the argument :
They are not requiring it of you, it is voluntary.
so i've had the little box for quite some time now and wanted to give feedback:
If you're like me and in the summer ride the bike all the time and too broke to do anyhting in the winter so your truck never moves... its still a bad deal!
They keep telling me it loses connectivity (i.e. they think i pull it out) and they dont give me the discount. I tell them its in and they tell me its a malfunction so they automatically give me 10% off my premium.
So given the circumstances when I drive anywhere it rides in the cupholder. I plug it in as I pull in the driveway.
When it did work and they monitor my driving habits they said I should have been dead because it shows sharp accelerations in every direction. Apparently my 154K mile suspension is a little too rickety for their sensative box. Dont get it, its a waste of time. If they catch you abusing it (hooking it up to a battery and sitting in a garage) it constitutes as insurance fraud.
