I'll post here since it is in my 86 4x4. Can someone tell me what is up with these things? For the second time in five years they have cracked.
This time on the outside under the exhaust ports.
Runs good, just leaks water. Prior heads were cracked but I can't recall where, it was redone shortly after I bought it. I had heard these were prone to cracking so I was careful not to overheat it. New radiator, w.p. 195 thermo, everything was new. Are they better nowadays?
I don't recall having any of these problems with the f.i. 5.8's we had at work. Ford has the bare heads for big valves available I may put in. Anybody had any such experience or advice?
Windsor heads are not known to crack like that. Did the same side head crack? I'd look to some other cause for the problem, it's unlikely that you'd get two defective heads.
Currently I have two cracks on the right bank under No's 2&3 exhaust ports. On the left side cracks under 6,7&8 exhaust ports. All of these cracks are exactly the same, vary in length a little. Run from the upper part of the bolt hole to the far side of the exhaust port. Strange in that they are all in the exact same fashion. I'm wondering if maybe they was deposits left in the jackets and they created hotspots. Thats my best guess so far.
