Updated Ignition

While doing some looking up on here i decided that when i update my ignition latter on this month im going the big distributor route. Ive got a couple of questions i couldnt find asked. This is for a 1975 ford f150 ranger 390fe electronic ignition i believe.

I figured id go MSD Cap and rotor with either an Champion or Motorcraft Plug
Either MSD, Taylor, Ford Raceing, Or Petronix wire set.

My questions are,

On the writeup they say use the 8.5mm wireset from a mustang but i was curious if you could go with a 8.0 or 9.0mm set as well.

I figured id replace the Coil as well but looking up in summit they didnt give me many options so i was wondering what type of coils you guys were running and if you can recomend me come combos you have done and have worked well.

Also when you update this ignition what does the gap in the plugs change to.

And finally i dont think we have mustangs to scrounge through in the junkyard that stuff gets picked off pretty quickly. Can you pick up that spacer new in the parts store.

Thanks
Ben

I found a company that converts GM HEI distributors to fit a ford. This way you only buy one thing and your out $100.00. There no more seperate coil and ignition box. You get twice the fire for half the money. I went with the accel 8.8 wires and iridium spark plugs. Its a pretty good combination. The gap will normally stay the same on the plugs. I will find the company that I got it from if thats something your interested in.

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:

Also, there is now an excellent installation article on the D.U.I. Distributor on the Ford-Trucks.com site at:

I run the a 84 style duraspark big cap, with brass terminals(stock parts) with a set of accel 8.8 spiral cores-these were engine matched, and ends are factory crimped-I used a set for a 460-80's big cap style. I had to cut and make a double male ended coil wire to match the posts of the dist. cap and coil.
I light it off with an msd blaster E-coil for an 89 mustang 5.0, and it is triggered by a gm hei module which is hidden-and works nicely.
The stock distributor has been re-curved for propane, and this setup lights off some ngk V-grooves, fast and consistent.
took me a bit to cobble it all together-yet I did run a holley cdi unit, and an msd 6al, and so far this seems to work just as good-yet I can still get parts anywhere if something fails.
