I was watching motorweek tv and they were talking about a bmw x6 which is one of those crossover suv things. had all kinds of bells and whistles, I wonder what would happen if some actually went 4 wheeling in it?
The modern day crossover SUV is nothing more than a minivan without the convience of sliding doors.
That being said you'd be surprised at how much offroading you can do in a traditional rwd stationwagon or minivan. I've driven a delta88 paces that city folk consider "hardcore wheelin"
Thousand$ of dollars of damage to exterior panels, just like taking a Chevy Avalanche off road, the first thing to go is all the exterior cladding.
I disagree. My Avalanche does quite well off road and the plastic panels are tough! Easier to replace the plastic panels than to fix the body. Not that I have ever had to. It's one of the main reasons I bought it for the off-roading I do. But I digress...
That Beemer isn't marketed at all to anyone who goes off road. I don't even think BMW expects someone to go off road with it.
monsta, well first off the thead I started was more of a joke than anything, the result of not enough sleep, lol anyway I think the segment on tv said the x6 could go off road and in fact they did go over the 4 wheel drive system, but your right they are not marketed as a off road vehicle, and most will never see off road but thats kind of the point what if some rich dude gets all liquered up and takes that baby 4byin'? as far as the avalanche goes I know a few people that own one and they have all complained about the plastic. I am not knocking your rig just saying what I have heard.
You guys need to realize that there's a HUGE difference in offroading as a means to get somewhere and offroading for the sake of offroading.
Your average weekend warrior sportsman who fishes, hunts or just checks up on the place can get by with only a modicum of offroad capability coupled with some driving skill and intelligence.
Your hardcore offroader is going to take his or her vehicle to it's limits, taking on the most averse trails for no other reason than they're there. He's gonna break parts and destroy body panels even on the most rugged models
I'm a pretty good example of this. I own a Jeep YJ that I've lifted, regeared and just drive and wheel for pure enjoyment.
But come this weekend when muzzleloader season opens I'll be using my 92 Astro van with AT tires and no carpet inside. Because let's be honest 99.9% of the places worth going have some form of road leading in.
krochus, I totally agree I 4by (montana slang for 4 wheeling) at least once a week in my bronco, and by far myself and my rig are not hardcore to me, but in some peoples opinons I am a hardcore 4byer living in montana my whole life what's tame to me might be severe to someone else it's all a matter of perspective. that being said if one took an x6 where i go it would probably fall apart. and no u could not get an astro van or a station wagon where i go either.
