Exactly what is that sound? When I start the truck, it's like a second motor comes on and idles for a while and then goes off? An ex-friend (long story) of mine said that the expeditions do that. Why does it do it and what exactly is it?

 

Assuming that you have the air ride suspension, you're hearing the air compressor pump up the suspension.
