I am heading out the door to work so forgive me for not serching, but...
I have this bad vibe happening ONLY when I hit a small or large bump in the road. One second it's smooth riding the next, it feels as though I am driving on a wash board road.
I have changed the carrier bearing and pulled off the front tires and torn down to the point of removing the hub bearing but didn't pull it because my friend suggested I get my tires ballanced before I go dropping $350 freakin' bones for a new bearing.
Two things I notice when driving is:
1. There is a rattle that sounds like a loose lug nut flopping around inside the plistic lug nut cover... BUT all are tight!?!?!?!
AND...
2. The vibe gets much worse as I accel and vear around corners.
Maybe...... Front drive shaft? Loose or worn out spring bushings?
I did take the wheel off on the pass side and spin the unit bearin and it did feel and sound "gritty". Is this the unit bearing going out? If it is... is there any place you guys have found Dana 60 unit bearings on line or otherwise cheeper than $300?
Yup, sounds like the bearing itself is shot, however, lock the hub, and try it again. That noise might be the needle bearing inside the wheel bearing. It spins in relation to the axle when the hub is UNLOCKED. Locking it makes the axle spin with the wheel bearing, so it takes the needle bearing out of the equation.
It was the needle bearing in teh back AND the stupid water seal. Could Dana screwed this up any worse? The entire weight of the axle rests on this flimsey seal that is crammed into the 5-6 inch hole of the outer knuckle. Granted the needle bearings are supposed to carry some of the weightbut the second they go out and rust up and fall out then this $47 seal goes out. Damn unit bearings and their supid needs.
