Trains are good at moving a large amount of a product or material, but individual shipping is not as effective.
I don't see road trains happening any time around the US, due to safety issues. We already have enough troubles with singles and doubles, not likely to go anything much more than that. (I realize there is even some triple smaller trailers, but most of the US doesn't have those, just in more open areas.)
Let me put it to you this way,,,,
1. Does your GAS STATION have a rail siding? (NOPE!)
2. Does your FOOD STORE have a rail siding? (NOPE!)
3. Does your favorite SHOPPING MALL have a rail siding? (NOPE!)
4. Does your favorite SPORTS BAR have a rail siding? (HELL NO!)
5. Does your DEALERSHIP have a rail siding? (DON'T THEY WISH!)

Sounds like you're trying to put people OUT OF WORK!

I venture to guess you are backing up my statement, rather than question it, since we have the same stance...

I'm with you. My livelihood depends on truckers. And truckers depend on me.

Somebody wants to park a few million trucks, well, it puts a few more million people out of work between maintenance workers, dispatchers, and every level of management in trucking and truck repair.

Wanna run yard goats instead? You'll see a bunch of pissed off mechanics too. I don't like working on yard goats. I don't know any other mechanic that does either.

no one is saying to stop using trucks for point delivery. the value of using trains for that ended over 100 years ago. what I am saying is to stop the lunacy of using a truck to haul frieght great distances. Companies that are going to survive are already doing this.

the 5 decades of cheap fuel allowed this country to behave idiotically at little cost. And given that the average trucker has <3 years and is a slip seater to boot, we really are not putting anyone out of work. people with those credentials are well suited to drive railyard to destination (and back) traffic

Don't tandems and triples put people out of work as well?

Railroads need people for maintenance, construction, operations, etc. too.

I don't think this country would run for long without any one transportation system and they all have their place but let's face it - coast to coast movement of freight such as cars, coal, etc is much more efficient by rail than truck.

And how would they do that? Trains do not to run to the grocery store. Trains don't have sidings at Home Depot. Yes, trains move a lot of America's freight but trucks are a vital part of that system as well.

Edit: saw that others took up the argument before me.

I dunno if we have the infrastructure in place for that.

I'm sure a cost study has been done.

trains could save millions of gallons of fuel a year...prolonging our supplies and reducing over-all cost of doing business

I would like to see passenger trains that can go coast to coast in 24 hours

any longer and it would make it hard to ride the train on a 1 week vacation

ya Id like to see a driver do it legally. even if you got a DOT'er to believe a strict 10/8 driving/sleeping entry, at 550 miles per 10 in 3 days you are about 500 miles shy of one of those coasts.

but a train, 48 hours if a hot intermodal is not out of our reach. and oh, that would be the equivalent of 200 trucks arriving at once. with the next batch 15 minutes behind it.

If you are a traffic manager for a large firm, this is hyper attractive.

FYI,,,,
The hours of service changed in 2003.
Drive time is now 11 hours. Most companies log at @ 60/70 MPH. Thus 650 - 700 miles per day per drive time. Werner Enterprises has a "Paperless Log Book" Which I drove for them and loved it! Drove DOT Cops nuts!
Sleeper berth time is now 10 hours.
On Duty/ Not Driving is reduced to 4 hours per 24 Duty Hours.

BTW, If you have never been truckin',,,Ask a Trucker, He'll tell you straight about the trucking industry right now.

1 other thing,,, When a semi wrecks,,, it takes a few hours to clean up,,,
BUT!!! A Derailment takes days and weeks!
