I'm new to Forums. Retired, living in Florida...planning a move to Arizona soon. Recently bought E350 Box Van for the move.
High mileage 161K. Developed a miss in 40MPH range. Can see light flash at #4 COP during idle and under torque load. Removed...inspection shows no burns...<2 ohms pri...8.2Kohms sec. However, it appears that maintaining contact at secondary within the boot is erratic. I do not know the construction inside the boot so, maybe this contact is predicated on proper insertion of spark plug.
Concerning the 'flash' observed and noticing the upper surface of the coil is encased in a translucent white material...could it be that I'm seeing an internal flash between primary and secondary. I was not able to see nor hear typical spark flash in tight space around the COP and boot during a dark test.
Did not observe flash at other coils.
Does this make any sense at all ? BOZZ

The "translucent white material" is grease like material? If so it is di-electric grease and is supposed to be there.
The COP boot should pull off the COP as they are replaceable on all that I have seen.

Thanks for the quick response. The white material I'm referring to is top of cop and is rigid. Of course it is a dielectric as is the balance of the unit made of bakelite. My thought was that the translucent material would pass light if there was an internal arc and thereby it is a simple troubleshooting factor confirming shorted coils.
I pulled the boot off and measured 2.6Kohms from spring to tip and
5.6Kohms spring to 12V connector.
Close inspection shows a hairline crack in the bakelite along bottom near the boot orientation arrow. I will apply JB WELD EPOXY over 2 layers of dielectric tape to see if this is the hi-volt leak. Will let you know what happens.
BTW, Beckley is my birthplace. Left there in 1949...lotsa cuzzins there !
