200K and finally an engine problem

Went to start it yesterday morning, a little cool ( 65°). Long crank and when it does start it acts like it is hitting only on 7 cylinders and puffing white smoke. Drive a few yards and seems to clear up but still smokng. When completely warm smoke goes away but is still running rough and down on power.
Any of you expert have any ideas. I have to drive down to Brawley next week and I don 't want any problems on the road. It will be around 600 miles round trip.

Thanks for any help
Steve

Check the somple things first. Oil full and clean. How did it start this morning? You may want to check your GPR.

When was the last time you had the batteries replaced?

Batteries wouldn't have anything to do with rough running and power loss fully warmed up.
It sounds to me like you are losing or have lost an injector and need to go into the valve covers.

Maybe an UVCH harness issue. Dan's right, time to snoop under the v/c's.

does the truck do this at any other starts through out the day? i.e. if it is warmed up does it do as you described?
If it does not then I am thinking GPR or glow plugs, if sysptoms still exist when warm then I would think undervalve cover harness, or an injector.

I'd say lazy injector probably needing to be checked up on like Dan said, or UVCH as Chris said... I had a similar issue with air getting into the fuel system and the whole side of injectors went off line for a while, but that was my fault...

Something I didn't say was there are no codes stored in the computer. This AM it took a long time to start and when it did it had a hard mis and white smoke. My driveway is uphill and when I trounched on it the miss seemed to disappear at about 2000 RPM. The hard mis never came back but there is a noticible vibration all the way up the RPM scale as in a weak cylinder.

Thanks Guys

UGH!
From what I have learned about diesels, this could potentially be a bad one.
Classic symptoms of low compression.

What did you use to pull the codes? The free scans at the auto parts stores won't work on these trucks. If you pull the oil cap with the engine running, what does it look like?

After a good night's sleep, I am changing my mind here.
It sounds like an injector to me.

Chris, I use an Actron scanner. It did see a code for restricted air filter which happened about a month ago. I have since replaced the filter. I did pull the oil fill cap off while idleing and didn't see an appreciable amount of blowby gasses. Looked normal to me.

I hope you are right Dan with your second thought. Thank you for rethinking it.

Anyway I don't have time to do this myself with work being the way it is. I took it to a good diesel shop here in town and they are backed up way into next week so I took it to the Ford dealer whomI trust to do good work on the Ford diesels. He is supposed to let me know today what they found.

Thanks again all

Steve
