shackle flip

I have a 77 Ford f150 4x4. I am looking to get about 3" of lift in the rear, but want to eliminate the stock 2" block and dont want to add a re arched spring or add-a-leafs. Looking at the tension design of the shackle (the leaf spring-shackle mount is above the shackle-frame mount). I think I could get about 4" of lift by flipping this tension design to a compression design. Has anyone done this before? Could you give me your opinion on results and costs?

I have done this on my 53 Dodge. It gave me 4" of lift, and it rides better now than it did before. I have a friend that drew out the specs, I cut the metal and welded them together. All in all, I have about $20 in them. I am considering doing the same to my 1/2 - 1 ton. I had a 4" suspension under the 1/2 ton, but when I put the dana 70 in the rear and the leaf sprung solid axle in the front, I am about 2" shorter in the rear. I am going to do the brackets and remove my block. This should add the height, and smooth out the ride.

Instead of cutting and welding, how bout grinding and bolting? Expect a 4-5" lift from doing it this way
