went to get tires put on today and i was having issues with my 4x4 it was squalling and grinding real bad only in 4x4 though they said it was probably u joints.what do you all think before i start tearing it down next weekend?could it be something else?and how hard is this and do i need any special tools?any chance on a step by step?
my bad i didnt mention it was the front drive shaft.the noise is comin from the drivers side front and when in 4x4 the wheel hops and feels like its dragging could the u joint just be worn and binding.oh and my truck is extended cab.thanks dave im always lookin at you posts and replies for info on random stuff.
mine did the same thing. real loud real high squeel. it'd make your teeth hurt. dogs would howl for blocks around. i thought it was the brakes. got to looking and saw the u-joints in the front axle are shot. whoever installed them put the grease cert so that you can't get to them with a grease gun. i shot some wd-40 on them as a band-aid untill i can get them replaced. i'll be replacing the axle u-joints soon too cos i can't grease them either. luckily with my firestone discount at orielly's they're under $20 apiece.
Napa has a very nice U-Joint tool kit that I rented for 5 bucks for 2 days. Sure was easy compared to trying to beat the bearings out with a hammer. I just did mine, pull the driveshaft and do it on a bench or saw horses replace the carrier bearing at the same time. You will think you are driving a new truck when you are finished!! U joints are really easy if you remove the driveshaft, any decent shop will do them for you if you bring them the drivetrain. They will also balance the driveshaft.Good Luck and check back if you need more help.
