Ford choosed the location where the pickup currently is, rather than the pan, and the transmission overtemp calibration tables are based on that. That is the one the PCM uses for every day monitoring, because it needs the true operating temperature.

Ken, you're talking about apples; I'm talking peaches. I'm just referring to a sensor to monitor trans temp with an external, independent gauge, which is what I thought tylus was looking to install, and the "best" place to monitor temps in that context.

You gave me a hint, though, about something I was wondering about. I have seen the temp sensor in the valve body illustrated in the service manual and assumed it monitored pan temp, or something near to it. I'd really like to know exactly what it does monitor. So when you get back from "The Bobs" I waiting with bated breath to hear. I'm just a few steps away from installing a temp sensor in my new M-H pan. I'm hoping you are going to tell me the internal sensor monitors something besides pan temps!!!

tylus- Sorry if I seem to be hijacking the thread. I'll just take it for a test drive down an unmarked trail! I remember B&M used to have fittings to splice a sensor into a cooler line, which is about as easy as it gets.

Finally, did anyone say what temp that test plug on the trans measures? Tha same as the internal perhaps? That's something else I'd like to know.

Livewire and is cousin, the Xcal 3, have both seen their share of glitches. The Xcal 3 won't read some of the DTC codes in my 2004 Powerstroke that my XCal 2 will. http://www.**************/test/rep/register.php . I've got the Xcal, Xcal 2, Xcal 3, a couple of chips, and returned a Livewire. Even have the first SCT product, a blue programmer (it was a Superchips programmer that was rebadged for SCT that we dealers could load tunes on). Some of their products... very good but others, they released too soon.

Its not that the Livewire isn't a great product. It is. But, it suffers from two problems: a checkered past (the problems may have addressed by now) and its bulky. Its much bigger than the Edge and doesn't come with anything to custom mount it in an F150. The Edge/Gryphon/DaskHawk all have the nice free custom mount for the F150, it looks OEM. I need to give a shout out for the nice folks at PHP (Gryphon guys). They gave me one of these mounts - I modified it with a Dremel tool to fit my much larger DashDAQ.

If you can find out if the problems have been resolved (ask a high volume SCT dealer), and you can come up with a mounting solution, its a very nice unit. I don't want to outright knock it out of the running, it is a contender but there are considerations.

UPDATE:

I've been looking for a Trans Temp gauge for over 1 month now. Finally got my hands on a brand new one for $30...only it's a Oil Temp Gauge. Called up Autometer and they assured me that the oil one would work for my purposes.

Ended up getting the Autometer Cobalt #6148

It looks pretty similar to the Trans Temp...just doesn't say trans on it.

now I've got another few questions. For you all who have used that access port
1. When you pull the blank plug, did tranny fluid pour out?
2. What size was the fitting? 1/8"?
3. Where in the truck did you route the wiring?

I love eBay. For $90, I've gotten the Autometer Cobalt Boost Gauge, Cobalt Temp Gauge, Cobalt Narrowband A/F gauge. 2 were new, and 1 used. From a store, I would have probably dropped $200 for them all. Now I'm waiting to recieve my A/F meter and I'm done I think in that department

1. No. Only a few drips.

2. I cannot remember.

3. I followed it up to the engine compartment and through a pass-though in the firewall. Easy 'nuf.

Tylus,

I've been following your progress and I hate to rain on your parade but I've got to be honest with you about these, before you end up disappointed in the long run, or worse, remain ignorant that what you have isn't as good as what you could have. Those half-sweep temp guages (and most of the other half sweep cheap lines) are not what I would call great gauges. They aren't very accurate plus there is a 20 degree difference between the ticks. There's a reason they retail for half the cost of the full sweep versions.

Put them back on Ebay, and look for the higher end gauges Autometer sells, and make sure they are a full sweep so you can read them out of the corner of your eyes (half sweeps are much harder to read as quickly). You can find the better lines on Ebay --- they will cost you more than the cheap stuff but less than full retail. Keep in mind with Ebay you have no manufacturer's warranty which is understandable since many of the Ebay dealers are violating MAP.

You've got a blower in the vehicle, why skimp on monitoring the vehicle's health? It would be like running Walmart straight weight oil in it because it costs the least!

I agree with you 100% Ken. This is only a temporary situation.

The only thing that I think I've wasted money on so far is the Narrowband A/F gauge. I can always move the Oil Gauge over into using it for a Oil Temp and pick up the full sweep Trans temp later.

In the Spring when I've recovered from the Holidays, I fully plan on getting a Wideband A/F.

The master plan has me most likely dropping another $1,000 to $1,500 on the truck for Troyer Tuning + pulley upgrade, updated gauges, and most likely be getting a Livewire...the functionality of it is hard to pass up. Also want e-fans if I can build a good kit.

but until then, I gotta pay for Anniversary, Christmas and several birthdays...the truck budget is mostly shot . So making do with what I can find for cheap right now. A few cheapies now are better IMO than nothing at all for 4-6 months.

wanna know what really sucks? where I work there are a few places where the truck doesn't fit (too tall) for parking. so I've had to take the other vehicle. Truck is getting to be a weekend driver for me. I am not a happy camper about this ...wife likes the new arrangment though

Hey, I understand priorities! I have my 15th wedding anniversary coming up this spring and I've got some major plans under way. I'm a dead man if this one isn't special!
