1992? mazda navjo/explorer
anyways... i was wanting to build a nice little trail toy... and the thing is cheap enough i could add what i want, cut what i want... and dent it to heck and back... so i was thinking about picking it up... but was wondering what a good choice on a automatic tranny would be... and what i could yank the tranny out of... the motor is in decent shape... so i was looking for what i could pull the tranny out of.... i figure i could pull it out of anything with a 4.0 from mazda to ford.... but what about the smaller and bigger motors?
i really dont want to go with a manual trany like it should have, but would like to add a auto, along with a manual shift transfer case....{just so much to go wrong with me and extra buttons....}
The push button four wheel drive of that era, IMO, is the WORST design. Mine has gone out several times, and even as it sits now, it is not working. Switching to a manual transfer case is a good idea.
Look for Gen 3 Rangers for the manual T-case, as well as an A4LD. It will be a hard process, but I am sure you can find one at a wrecking yard. You could also try looking for the 4R44E, but I'm not sure if it has the same bolt pattern as the early 4.0....Don't quote me on that, however.
ive figured the push button thing just wasnt a great idea... along with auto locker front ends.... BLEH!!! especially for some one who wants to tear it up on some rocks.... logs rivers snow and mud =] LOL
3rd gen rangers would be the 89-97 correct? im not really as smart as i may seem LOL
{well its more just the fact that im pretty new to fords but could tell you the trannys that will fit atleast full size chevs and classic mopars for the most part}

Gen 2's are 89-92, and I believe they started putting the 4.0 in them in 91.
And it's actually 91-94 Explorers for Gen 1's, and 95-2001 for gen 2.
