Diagnostic help requested

LAST EDITED ON 03-Dec-00 AT 00:51 AM (EST)[p]Need help diagnosing a problem. I have a '92 4X4, Ford manual hubs, Dana 44 @ 3:55's, BW 13-56 transfer case. The 4X4 is still working in both hi and low range but when under load there is a "clunking" sound coming from the drivers front side. It does it in loose rough surfaces (gravel, snow) under load. There are no similar sounds noticeable under any conditions when it is in 2WD, just 4X4. I know something is going, I just don't know enough to say if it's in the hub mechanism or elsewhere up front. Any help on what it might be would be appreciated (because it's minus 10 today and I really, really need to go outside and work on the truck and freeze my fingers off because the #&$@ thing didn't have the decency to break when the weather was warm!!!!) Thanks in advance.

My truck did this in the middle of an all night plowing session once. It turned out to be the U-joint and knuckle at the end of the axle. The needle bearings wore out in the U-joint causing the cap to fall off (I hate those ungreasable u-joints!). If all the caps are still in place, see if there is any rusty looking powder coming out from under the cap. That's the first place that I would look.
