Some idiot tried to scam me.
I sold an engine online to a fella in the states. I also have 3 others trying to buy the engine. They all agree to $1300. for this antique rare engine.
Anyways the they are to also include shipping costs. The first cheque came for $5000.00 no return address nothing inside saying who it is from. Just a cashiers cheque with a banks name on it. No address to the bank.
So I emailed back to whom I thought it came from. He verified it was from him.
Now get this he first contacted me saying he is from Buffalo NY. :ater he says Chicago and that he is presently in the UK .
Well I took it to my bank and they refused to cash it and I talked to the fraud expert and he said it is a scam. If it got cashed they would ask me to wire the difference in shipping back to them. Then you are still sitting with what you sold and eventually the banks will come after you for the money once they find the cheque is no good.
I also contacted the bank on the cheque and they said it is a forged cheque and fruad. Their cheques have branches and addresses written on them.
I sent an email back to this guy telling him my bank will not cash it and their Fraud dept. is looking into it. I have not heard back from him.
My bank says to shred the cheque.
It was nice getting a cheque that big if it was legit and I got to keep it. Man that would help with some bill paying here.
So beware of these guys. I knew something was wrong when I got the envelope with nothing written inside and the cheque just did not look right.
Anyone else have this happen to them.?
Scams like this commonly happen all the time, this one has been around for quite awhile.
Every so often a deal comes up on places like Kijiji that seem too good to be true and usually are. I report them as fast as they come up...........
To buy & sell locally really helps to cut down on fraud, as usual it`s buyer beware.
There`s a warning about a Sasktel scam. An Automated voice message asks customers to renew insurance polices, driver`s licences over the phone with their credit cards, a way to get the card numbers I guess.
Anyone contacted is asked to call Phonebusters @ 1-888-495-8501
You would be surprised at how many of the older generation isnt used to credit card use, and scams, and will give out that info. I mean if sasktel calls ya and needs your credit card number why wouldnt ya give it to them? It used to be alot more common though, everyone is smartening up to this.
Im glad ya didnt get scammed Glen, but it doesnt surprise me ya didnt. Your a smart fella, and ya did the right thing by trying, and checking into everything.
Im surprised the cheque wasnt from nigeria though.
The engine is a split head flathead six out of 1926-32 Pontiac. The first six years that Pontiacs were made. had these engines. They are rare and worth a bit of coin if still rebuildable to someone restoring one of these old cars.
My neighbor has one that I'm selling for him.
As for tese scams. A lot of seniors get hit by them. Like my mother in law. She gets easily confused and does not understand things that easy. So people like her or on meds (prescibed) can be tricked in to the scams.
Ryan, are you practicing your french, or whats up with the accents?
Probably like me, fat fingers, too small a key board. I need one like some of the phones have, with big giant buttons........................
Your right Glen, scams on older people aren`t anything new!
