I am having my first major trouble with my truck at 48k. When I am idling in gear, there is knocking sound coming from somewhere on the front of the truck. this is a deep sound and sounds like a rod or piston noise. At least I thought it was engine related until recently as the trans has started slipping when you let off the gas ,then reapply. It also jumps out of gear when going up a hill (not at a shift point ,either) It jumps out and then goes back to normal in a second, like it never happened!?
I guess my main question is,,Does the knocking sound like something in the trans is broken?? By the way,,wierd but true,I only hear the noise from inside the truck. Outside the high frequency noise under the hood drowns it out....Help me ,,please,,,,,65

Since you have had previous troube with the pulley system, I would check there. I doubt very much that it is the engine. If it is a simple stethoscope with a long rod (or a piece of steel and put your ear to it) would reveal a rod or piston. These engines last a long time ..ask law enforcement. They get over 170,000 miles and no problems. You also might want to re-install your chip. Take it out and reinstall it according to the instructions. Mine had a problem that solved itself after reinstalling. (It would cut out like the coils had died for a second).
Well, the knocking is still there, but the trans has started behaving again? This seems to have happened the same time I moved and tied back the infamous harness that touches the a/c condensor..... I don't know how that would stop the tranny from slipping? Maybe the trans had a blockage of some sort and broke free about the same time. It's very strange but true. Can't wait to see what the dealer has to say about it. I pulled the chip last week, and when I did the engine made a wierd chattering noise on the next startup......
The noise was still there after everything quieted down again,so I put it back in. I'm thinking that the engine may go at any time
now,and it has me worried enough to take it to
the dealer where I am in Birmingham. I have
an appointment for this Tuesday coming up.
I will install a large trans cooler and a pod mounted temp gauge when I get home to Houston,or get someone else to install them.
I have the towing pkg. and it comes with a cooler, and the internal radiator one as well.
I have seen guys on other sites who put the temp. gauge on first, and their trannys were running borderline failure temps, even without
towing anything!! So,I believe a larger cooler
with a cooling fan attached to it is the way to go,,,,,,,thanks for responding,,,,,,,65
