4x4?

I have a '76 f100 4x4 with the factory dana 44 "one wheel wonder" front differential. I am considering using a spool in the front. What experiences have you guys had with that. The only time It will be locked in is when I'm in the mud. It already has a detroit locker in the rear.

If all you are using it for is the mud, then you should be fine. If you ever have to drive it anywhere else in 4wd, put an Ez-locker in it. Also, a spool is locked solid, so this magnifies the stress on the u-joints on the axle-shafts. I am running a ez in the front of my Dodge 44, and am buying one for the 44 in my Ford as well. Little more than a spool, but only about $250.

I've never heard of anyone putting a spool in the front diff mainly because it makes steering so hard and unsafe. With both wheels turning at the same speed it would be almost impossible to steer. Most people put limited slips in the front or ARB air lockers (so they can be turned on or off if need be). I would not recommend putting a spool in the front pumpkin.

4x4?

i have been tossing this one up also.....see i can see the hard steering part but the added traction would be great. BUT your 4x4 would be useless on bad weather days (ie- ice/snow) unless you unlock one of the front wheels....which would still make some problems but not as bad as both locked in. I am going to put a spool in my rear end....i know, i know....but as far as i've heard...it works if you dont get stupid. but locker or limited slip would be a good way too. really up to you....try it and if you dont like it, its not that big of a deal since they are sooo cheep.
