If some of you recall I asked which type of motor setup I should do to my old 360 in my 72 ford. Well I have somewhat made a decesion but now I have some questions with this decision. I want to make the motor a 390 definetly now heres the questions. I need to find a 390 crankshaft so if anyone has suggestions on a used or new crankshaft for a 390 please let me know since they seem to be hard to find now a day. So if all goes well and for now focusing on the bottom end do I need to get different main and rod bearing caps as well to acommodate for the new crank? And last question about the bottom end would be should I upgrade to hypereutectic pistons? I think my cast iron pistons are good but they are orginal so im a little unsure of the condition that they are in. Thanks!
i thought about doing this too. but i think if your gonna go through all that trouble tearing the motor apart you might as well do everything fresh. like take your heads and get them refurbished, as well as hone all the cylinders and put new rings, etc....
i happen to have compression thats within standards and only 1 valve/seal in question on cylinder 7 which makes smoke only in the morning when i start it. so if it aint broke dont fix it i say, and im not gonna touch it until it kicks the bucket. and with it being a ford its going to be a long long time before that happens.
hey 1972fordf-100 its me BrentHenry1989 from youtube, just say this thread and wanted to see how your truck is coming along, you should make video of the current state of your 72, i have missed seeing that old girl, anyways i am glad your getting help on here, and ask number dummy anything, the guy is a ford genius and he knows his stuff, and good luck with the 360 to 390 and i bet the 72 drive line is making you do a 360 lol no pun intended! talk to ya later! and see ya on the tube!

Thanks dave yeah to be honest with you I have done the head job last year and haven't done too much driving with it so a little chunk of money is saved there although for the heads Im thinking of definetly upgrading to an eldebrock camshaft/lifter kit and springs Im still debating wether to go for swirl polished valves or not just depends I guess. Yeah I agree with you the old fe's will go on forever mines a fine example of that compared to my friends 350 chevy but thats another story thanks for the help just trying to save the money now to do it.

Thanks brent yeah number dummy is a genius when it comes to the id codes I really love the knowledge that I get from him when I talk to him. Yeah sorry for the lack of photos its been to rainy/cold out here to do anything this weekend and I did get it back from the shop with a new rebuilt c-6 i kinda miss not seeing a oil spot anymore where I park lol.
I once toured Tomadur Engine in LA aka GPD (Genuine Parts Distributors). This was FoMoCo's authorized rebuilder for the West Coast.
100's of different crankshafts were stacked up in racks with the nose pointed out with ID numbers stamped on them.
Does this place still exist? and can I get the rods from these people as well? I think I have found a set of hypereuntectic pistons for the motor but Im still debating if I want to get these yet or not.

Dunno if they're still there or not, but they didn't sell to the public, only to the dealers.

Where do you live? 390 stuff out here in SoCal is almost unlimited. Check with your local/surrounding machine shops for the crank and rods. Good Luck.

In live in rocky ford colorado very small town and im not sure to tell you the truth of too many places that sell 390 parts anymore around here seems like they have more parts for 350 chevys than these 390's I will ask around though didn't even think of machine shops which we don't have too many but its worth a shot plus theres always ebay of the options run out I guess. Thanks for the help.
If you are going to buy a 390 crank and rods and pay for the cores, then look at the new stuff that companies like Scat is making now. It may be cheaper to go with the new stuff. And remember you need 390 pistons also.
