Hi guys i have a 86 ranger 4x4 w/2.9 stole this little truck last year for 500. guy let it go cause he was tired of fixin it. it needed fuel tank fixed thats it! now this runs sweet. BUT it gives me a fit every morning when i go to fire her up you kinda have to nurse the pedal till she warms up 10 seconds or so or it will just shut off. once out on the road it kinda falls on its face for about 1/4 mile or so you have to feather the gas some then it kicks butt. another thing is after she gets up to temp when you shut it off you have to give it about 1/2 throttle to fire or it wont start. now things ive done are total tune up plugs, wires, cap, rotor,. new module on distributor. fuel pumps both. fuel filters. im kinda leaning toward bad injectors maybe? or fuel pressure valve?
I just know someone here has battled this too. if i cant get this nailed down then i will just have to live with it. it gets me 20mpg with tools and boxes and ladder racks cant beat it. thanks guys
I would pull the codes, check the ECT and ACT temp sensors, check the fuel pressure after sitting for a while, and while running. The Coolant and Air temp sensors tell the ECM to juice up the gas when it's cold, just like a choke on a carb. If the pressure is low, it can't give enough gas.

I'm placing my bets on the fuel pressure regulator or the IAC. The FPR started going bad on my ranger and it would start very hard, run rough until you gave it some gas, then finally it let go and just started dumping gas through the vacuum line into the intake. So I replaced that
But the idle air controller is also bad on my truck. Sometimes it won't start unless you give it some gas, other times it revs up to high idling.
