i have 3 air filter lids. 2 with out the soup bowl and 1 with soup bowl. i will do some mileage and power experiments to see which one is better.
any sugestions on how and what experamints to try???
btw i have a 89 f350 7.3l na zf5 dully 4:10gears 4x4
i have an 89 f350 crewcab , drove it for a year with the soup bowl and then removed it about two years ago
0 improvement
the truck has no more power than before and absolutely no change in fuel mileage
it visually looks like a restriction
i thought that also and removed mine
many believe it is an improvement but it is only a perceived one
like i stated i had one year of using the truck with it and its been two years since i removed it and there were no measurable differences
I could be wrong but I think the soup bowl would help air flow, not hurt it. Since it is curved, when the air hits it, it gently forces it downward helping to reduce turbulance. I don't see it blocking air flow and creating a restriction.
I also think the soup bowl actually surpresses the intake noise kinda like a muffler. If you take your lid off and run it, you will notice that it is alot louder. Many of ours at work don't have that bowl and you can hear a noticable increase in the loud intake noise. Ford or IHC probably tried to quiet it down cause the engine is already loud enough itself.
In my case, I also added a ram air intake along with removing the soup bowl. At the time I did not notice any improvements in milage, however I feel that the acceleration response was better, and the truck didn't slow down as bad when I got to an uphill grade in the highway. As noted above, the biggest improvement in performace comes from increasing exhaust flow. I've also added headers, and turned up fuel. I am very happy with the performace of my truck as it is now set up.
