u joint install...need help fast!!!
i decided to change both u joints on the front driveshaft in my '86 f-150 4x4 today. of course i pulled the old ones out without looking to see how they were installed. so i have two questions. my first question is which direction to install them. since they have grease fittings they have a raised line down the side with the fitting. is this supposed to face the driveshaft or away? my second question is about the c clips. when i put the squigly clips on the out side then the c clips dont fit on the inside. so can anyone tell me what im doin wrong and the right way to do it??? sorry this is so long but i need to get this fixed SOON.

i can help with a few things. first take those junk u joints back to the part store and go buy some quality dana or even better spicer u joints. the u joints will use either an inner c clip OR an outer style clip. if the joints you bought have both it usually means they are a junk brand. i would face the grease nipple toward the drive shaft and you should phase the grease nipple so that it is under compression. compression would be ahead of the driveshaft yoke when the shaft is turning to propel the truck forward.

Hardcore, they give you both types of clips, some use inner clips, some use outer, use the same new clips that match the old clips and throw the others away. Several companies including Dana offer heavy duty joints,they will cost about 40% or so more but are worth it.I got tired of getting the driveshaft "just right" to jam the end of a grease gun in and then getting as much grease outside the knuckel as in trying to hold it on the stupid grease zerk! So I buy the heavy duty knuckles with the pin grease fitting at the center of the cap,it always faces outward and the pin greaser fitting is cheap and screws into the tip of most standard grease guns.Hope this helps as greasing is a chore most of us find annoying.
